Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF)

ICF homes may not yet be the standard in the Pacific Northwest due to our generally mild climate, but the advantages of building these super efficient homes can be appreciated in any climate.

The following table shows comparisons between traditional wood framed homes, and ICF framed homes.

Building Attributes
Building Style Energy Efficiency (Approx. R-Value) Home Design Versatility Allergen Reduction Severe Storm Resistance Pest & Dry Rot Resistance
2x4 Wood Framing R-11 Yes No No No
2x6 Wood Framing R-19 Yes No No No
Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF) Up to R-50

(Forms avg. R-21 alone.)

Yes Yes Yes Yes

Additional benefits included in and ICF constructed home are:

  • Reduce heating costs by up to 44%

  • Reduce cooling costs by up to 30%

  • Reduction in sound transmitted through exterior walls

  • Consistent, draft-free interior climate

  • Long-lasting structure that doesn't decay or rot

  • Reduction in home repairs due to pest invasion or weather damage

As you can see, ICF homes have many other positive qualities. They are also easy to construct, cost close to the same as traditional wood framed homes to construct, and can be designed for virtually any home style.
